Dance Styles Taught
Salsa
Salsa movements originate from the Cuban Son dancing of the 1920s, with strong influences from the dance of Danzon, Mambo, Guaguanco and other Afro-Cuban folkloric dancing. Today's Salsa dancing is a rich blend of Latin-American and Western influences.
Salsa is normally a partner dance and Salsa can be improvised or performed with a set routine, choreography and freestyle.
Merengue
Merengue is a style of Latin American music and high energy dance with a two-step beat from the Dominican Republic. Partners hold each other in a open or closed hold position and can create various turn patterns as the footwork is very easy to master.
Zouk Lambada
Zouk Lambada was first developed in Rio de Janeiro around 1989. It is mainly danced in Brazil (Rio and Brasilia), Australia, The Netherlands, Spain and some other European countries.
It uses a modified, slower, smoother, even more sensual version of the lambada and is typically danced on Zouk-love style music.
Today Brazilian Zouk Lambada is also danced on R&B, Latin pop and Arabic music, mixed with a zouk music beat.
Bachata
Bachata is a genre of music that originated in the Dominican Republic in the early parts of the 20th Century and spread to other parts of Latin America and Mediterranean Europe. Its subjects are often romantic and sometimes referred to as the "blues music of the Dominican Republic" borrowing from the Cuban Bolero.
In the 1990s, bachata's instrumentation changed from acoustic guitar to electric steel string. The new electric bachata soon became an international phenomenon, and today bachata is as popular as salsa and merengue in some Latin American dance-halls.
Bolero originated in Spain in the late 18th century, and is the name given to certain slow-tempo latin music and its associated dance and song. The Bolero has been popular for over a century, and still is today and is danced by either a soloist or a couple.
