How to Plan Your Wedding Dance Around a Very Long or Very Short Song
You've found the song. It's perfect. It's the one you both heard and just knew. The only problem is, it runs for five and a half minutes, or it fades out at the two-minute mark. Don't worry. At Let's Dance, we work with songs of every length, and we have beautiful solutions for both ends of the spectrum.
When Your Song Is Very Long
A song that runs past the four-minute mark can feel daunting at first. The thought of filling all that time with choreography, while everyone watches, is enough to make even the most enthusiastic couple feel a little nervous.
Here are your options:
The first, and most popular, is to edit your song. A skilled DJ or audio editor can create a clean, seamless edit of your chosen song that brings it down to a more comfortable two to three minutes. Most couples don't realise this is an option, but it's incredibly common. Your guests won't notice and you'll feel so much more confident having a clearly defined start and finish.
The second option is to embrace the length and build a fuller routine with your wedding dance instructor. This works wonderfully if you're starting your lessons early and have time to learn more choreography. A longer Rumba or a flowing Bolero with multiple sections and beautiful transitions can be absolutely stunning.
The third option is a two-part first dance, where the bridal party or guests are invited onto the floor partway through, giving you a natural break from being in the spotlight and turning the moment into a celebration.
When Your Song Is Very Short
A song that clocks in under two minutes presents a different challenge. Your first dance needs to feel complete and meaningful, not rushed. Here's how to handle it beautifully:
Your DJ can often add an instrumental repeat or loop the final section to give you a few extra bars. Alternatively, you might choose to flow straight into your next favourite song without stopping, creating a little medley that feels intentional and celebratory.
From a choreography perspective, shorter songs actually lend themselves to tighter, more polished routines. There's less time for nerves to set in, the steps are more contained, and the whole thing ends before anyone has a chance to lose focus. Many couples from Brisbane suburbs like Kedron, Windsor, and Chermside find that a short, punchy first dance is exactly what they wanted all along.
What We Recommend
Bring your song to your first private wedding dance lesson and let us listen together. We'll tell you honestly how it's structured, where the natural edit points are, and what choreography makes sense for its length. We've worked with everything from two-minute ballads to six-minute epics, and in every case, we've found a beautiful solution.
The right first dance isn't determined by the length of your song. It's determined by how the two of you move through it together.
