What to Do When Your Favourite Song Doesn't Fit a Standard Dance Style
You have a song. It's personal, it's meaningful, and it's played at every significant moment in your relationship. There's just one small problem: when you play it for your wedding dance instructor, there's a moment of quiet while they figure out exactly what to do with it.
We've been there. At Let's Dance, we've worked with some wonderfully unusual songs, and we've almost always found a beautiful solution. Here's how we approach it.
First, Understand Why It Happens
Not every song was written with dancing in mind. Some tracks have unusual rhythms, shifting time signatures, very slow tempos, very fast tempos, complex structures with spoken sections, or a build that makes it difficult to choreograph a conventional beginning, middle, and end.
None of this means the song is off the table. It just means we need to think creatively.
Option One: Edit the Song
Often, a song that seems tricky becomes completely manageable once we identify the section that works best for dancing and create a clean, seamless edit around it. Maybe the verse has a beautiful, steady rhythm that suits the Rumba perfectly, even if the chorus is a little unpredictable. A skilled DJ or audio editor can build a two-to-three-minute version of your song that works perfectly as a first dance, and your guests will never know.
Option Two: Find the Natural Rhythm
Sometimes a song feels like it doesn't fit a dance style until you really listen. At Let's Dance, we'll play your song and move with it, finding where the natural pulse sits, where the phrases begin and end, and how your footwork can be shaped around its unique structure. What seems like an unusual song can reveal itself to have a genuine Bolero or Cha Cha feel once you stop listening for it and start feeling for it.
Option Three: Create Something Truly Unique
Occasionally, the best solution is to acknowledge that the song is one-of-a-kind and create choreography that's equally unique. This might draw from multiple styles, perhaps opening with a flowing Rumba quality and shifting into something with a Zouk Lambada feel as the music changes. It might prioritise connection and expression over strict footwork patterns.
Some of the most stunning first dances we've ever choreographed were built around songs that "shouldn't have worked." They worked because we let the song lead rather than trying to force it into a box.
